Review: Napoli Violenta – Self Titled EP

Grindcore and grit: Napoli Violenta debut EP

The new, as well as the first, Ep by the hooded quartet Napoli Violenta, comes in my inbox, ready for my review.
The cover looks very eye-catching, and it shows, in black and white, the most famous protagonists of crime cinema, of which the band identifies itself as a “grindcore tribute”; in contrast with an aggressively yellow background with an erupting Vesuvius. But most of all, in the middle of the semi-toxic volcano cloud, the band’s logo stands out: yellow, jagged and very old school grindcore. In short, a vinyl that, once in your hands, can only inspire curiosity.
But it’s when you put it on the record player (or, in my case, when you press play) that it gets really interesting: the EP is full of complex sounds. The constant, besides the Neapolitan lyrics and the cinema quotations scattered all over the album, a very aggressive and clear drum is the base for a meddlesome guitar. The first track, that is the one that gives the name to the album, welcome us making things clear immediately: short but powerful tracks, characterized by a growling voice perfectly inserted in the general melody of the music, which is, in my opinion, a very uncommon characteristic in the genre.
Every song is noteworthy, but “I figli… so piezz’e grindcore” and “Goremorra” have definitely occupied a place in my heart. Also the covers are impeccable: the unmissable “you suffer” from Napalm Death, becomes “you lota” for the occasion and a very interesting “iron fist”, a Motorhead tribute that ends the album.
Congratulation guys, if this is the debut, I can’t wait to hear the rest!
