Radio Punk Editorial 5 – September 2023: Introducing Diyno Mixtape

Radio Punk Editorial 5: goodbye Meganews, here’s our new column “Diyno Mixtape”

Here we are again, after more than two years, with a new editorial. Before the summer break we left with a rather important announcement, namely the decision not to continue with the meganews. Yes, the article that we used to publish every two months, which included news from the punk and DIY world, will no longer be there. In this editorial we would like to tell you why we have made this decision, but above all we would like to introduce you to the new column that will replace the meganews.

Our decision came about as a result of various personal and collective considerations that gave rise to the need for us to focus more on the quality of the proposal rather than the quantity. In fact, the meganews did not have any kind of selection: everything we found around or that was pointed out to us appeared in the article.

Content that might have been very gratifying for bands, authors, labels, publishers and interesting for insiders and various people who wanted to discover something new, was instead a very time-consuming and not very satisfying job for us on a personal level. The reality was that we felt more and more like a one-way service, a kind of “service centre” you use to do paperwork. We knew this feeling very well – as it had already emerged in 2020 – and at the time led to the decision to stop doing reviews, interviews and news on demand.

Since 2020, our webzine has changed. As you may know, we no longer offer the canonical articles, but instead devote ourselves to in-depth articles, guides, stories, reflections, articles on local scenes and more. Hence, the meganews had remained there, acting almost as a bridge between these two phases, as it was the only article we continued to do even on commission.

Despite the evident positive sides of this type of article, such as the support to bands and other realities that it provides, we continued to feel the need to complete the evolution of our webzine by doing what we started in 2020: proposing something different, new and that really exalts us – trying, in our own small way, to become a point of reference both for those who are already inside the dynamics of the diy punk galaxy and those who are approaching this world for the first time and want to discover new things. After years of listening, participating, living this subculture and its spaces, we think we can and should do it.

So “Diyno Mixtape” is born, a column that will no longer be an archive, but a sort of “the best according to us”, always related to the world of punk and DIY. We want to create an appointment in which we can talk about what we liked, as if we were among friends and we could compare notes, keeping each other up to date on the novelties we have devoured in the last month. It will therefore be an article dedicated to recounting those latest releases, that have enraptured our hearts and that we are keen to recommend to you.

It will not be a space dedicated only to new albums, but you will be able to find books, films, fanzines and more, this being a collection of everything that has caught our attention. Moreover, it will not be a chart and the number of different releases may vary from time to time. So we will try not to spread ourselves too thinly by selecting as much as possible, avoiding long and dispersive lists. This is because we want to facilitate your consultation and enjoyment by giving you time and opportunity to discover and deepen what we are proposing.

In addition, this article will include a section called “also keep an eye on…” where we will include other goodies that we would like to mention. Here you will find, for instance, a video that we liked, other special projects, reprints, things that we did not have time to investigate because we discovered them late or were published at the end of the month, and more.

We would like to conclude by reiterating that we will no longer include anything on request, but we do invite you to let us know about your releases by e-mail (and no other channels). We will be happy to look at your projects, as we might discover something interesting that could end up among our favourites.

We are very excited about this new column. In fact, it will be stimulating and fun for us to express our opinions, and it will also be a nice challenge in which we will try from time to time to guide you in discovering new releases, hoping that you will be passionate about them.
Having no pretence to proclaim the list of the best works ever, we hope that Diyno Mixtape will also stimulate an exchange with those who follow us – so we invite you to be active by recommending and expressing your opinion in a constructive manner.

Many thanks to those who’ve been reading us and will continue to do so – we will see you again in November, with the first issue of this column!
