Punk / Punk Hardcore
Voltage – Mania
This new EP by the band from Kamloops in British Columbia messes up our guts with this aggressive and edgy sound, a hardcore punk blend reminiscent of bands like GBH, Discharge, Inepsy with unheard of power singing! 5 devastating tracks!
Rogo – In Un Mondo Senza Violenza (Symphony of Destruction | 12″ LP)
By now Symphony of Destruction is a regular label on Diyno mixtapes. If the previous edition featured the excellent Inferno Personale, this month the Breton label comes out with a band from East Rome with members of Sect Mark and Education. 5 songs sung, or rather ranted, in Spanish and 6 in Italian drag us into a dimension of deep unease and darkness to the sound of chaotic hardcore punk with a touch of metal. The lyrics, as the label writes, are based on the singer’s experience as an immigrant in a European country, with a strong anti-capitalist perspective. The sounds fit great with the musical proposition as does the artwork, screen-printed by hand as in all SOD productions. Great record!
Anarchopunk
Straw Man Army – Earthworks (La Vida Es Un Mus, D4MT LABS INC | 12” LP)
Owen and Sean’s New York duo complete their thematic trilogy on the failures of the West with “Earthworks.” Starting with the first 2020 album “Age of Exile” focused on the sad colonial history in the Americas, then moving on to “SOS”, dedicated to the pandemic and environmental crisis, they then conclude with this latest chapter in which they talk about the future and its bleak prospects. Musically, we are faced with an equally daring and complex sound experiment: from anarchopunk to post-punk to more ambient and jazz parts, combining melody, spoken word and peculiar rhythms. An album consisting of multiple layers that can be understood in multiple listens. A work of art framed by masterful artwork! PS: If you want to learn more about this eclectic band, a wonderful interview can be found on UP Zine #2.
Punk oi!
Iena – Fino Alla Morte (Timebomb Records, Hellnation Records | 12” EP)
To have such an aesthetically and technically curated object in our hands here fully restores the meaning to releasing a physical record in this age of digital and streaming. Yes, because, between the gorgeous artwork and the un-recorded side hand screen-printed by Nutty Print here the album becomes a wonder not only for the ears, but also for the eyes. On the musical side we are faced with 4 sumptuous, soaring punk oi! tracks with a precise and scratchy ’80s sound and these somber lyrics sung with that charisma and power in the choruses, a trademark of the band. A real gem!
Gewohnheitstrinker – Schlägerei (Randale Records | 12″ LP, CD)
The “habitual drinkers” (that’s the translation of their name) from Freiburg, return in this final 2024 with a splendid oi! record with a hint of hardcore, sung in German. The formula is always the same that the band has accustomed us to: fast-paced rhythms, singalongs that immediately get into your head and a raw but effective sound with just the right amount of melody that helps to fully immerse you in this concert atmosphere with several beers of dubious taste in your system. 11 cool tracks for fans of Brutal Bravo and all that nicely pissed off Teutonic punk oi!
Punk hc / post punk
Gun Fever – No Easy Way (Contra Records, Subculture For Life | 12″ LP)
Gun Fever from Athens come out with this 12” consisting of 6 tracks, which rides in full style the post punk wave contaminated by hardcore of recent times. The record consists of a barrage of songs with a post sound but with the typical nastiness of punk hc, characterized by frenzied rhythms juxtaposed with the dark and sometimes raw melodies, along with a very present bass to support it all. The charismatic and beautiful vocal lines are the icing on the cake along with the beautiful artwork. You will love it if you are also crazy about Chain cult (with whom the band shares a member) and Syndrome 81. A bombshell!
Benefit Releases
AA.VV: València: L’odi i les llàgrimes (Polze de la Mort | Tape)
Valencia’s punk scene united to raise funds for those affected by the DANA disaster event that recently hit that city in particular. As always, only the people help the people, and so while the political ruling class has left the people to their own devices, the Valencia punk scene has responded with solidarity and self-management. Regarding the compilation, many of these songs are unreleased and all these groups are active bands from the city of Valencia and surrounding areas. You can download this work at the price you like and all proceeds from this initiative will be donated to the Koordinadora Kolectiva Parkes (kolectivosparke.org) that is doing great work to help those affected. Gavroche / 17 Incubi – Brucia di Vita (Cassa Antirepressione delle Alpi Occidentali Benefit | 7”)
2 songs per band, both from Turin, mixed and not divided by side, fill the heart with rage and joy, as the songs in this 7” are furious yes, but also destined for the noble benefit purpose of supporting Cassa Antirepressione delle Alpi Occidentali (Western Alps Anti-Repression Fund). This fund, whose purpose is well explained in the insert and which we will summarize here by quoting a part of it, “was born in 2000 with the aim of coordinating, among some realities of anarchic individualities present between the Alpine arc and the Piedmont plain, the collection of funds destined for antirepression interventions and solidarity towards prisoners with whom these realities have contacts, friendships and affinities.” On the musical side we are faced with an excellent street punk oi! with strong hardcore influences and with the right melodic component as far as Gavroche’s tracks are concerned, while on the side 17 incubi, a trio with members and ex-members of Bull Brigade, Banda Del Rione, Youngang and S-Contro (to name a few), we find ourselves in front of a very fast, aggressive and unforgiving old-school hc, where the bass is devastating in its sounds and riffs. We are so happy to have participated in this co-producer coalition, if you want a copy just ask us or the other entities involved!
Ska Punk
La Ultima – Piante
Excellent debut for this young Chilean band devoted to ska-punk with post-punk and hardcore influences. The back-and-forth between the two voices lends effectiveness to the Spanish lyrics, which angrily and bluntly denounce society’s injustices. For now only in digital format, but a CD is coming soon.
Crust punk / d-beat
Canidos – El futuro es la extinción
From Tijuana comes this trio with deflagrating power. In this new chapter of their discography they pleasantly slaughter our eardrums with a raw d-beat infused with metalpunk elements reminiscent of our Hobos and Grog. 5 dark and edgy songs that made us cry out for more!
Future Terror – Degenerating Shithole
New release from the Richmond, Virginia-based band devoted to a crust punk d-beat capable of unleashing a dynamite charge of biblical proportions. The vocals, a desperate, angry roar, perfectly accompany these maddeningly paced songs. The dark, distorted and massive sounds are absolutely textbook and make these 10 tracks an ode to devastation. Let’s hope it comes out in physical format soon!
Post punk
Sympathy Flowers (Harshaura | Tape)
The quartet from Oakland, California, comes out with this dark, romantic-sounding tape. Sympathy Flowers play a very dark post-punk with 80s references but without giving up the sustained rhythms typical of more modern punk. The result is definitely hypnotic and sensual but also full of power thanks also to the anarchopunk influences. A perfect soundtrack for the freezing November fog!
Punk rock
L’esperimento del Dr. K – Magia Nera (Flamingo Records | CD)
The mysterious Dr. K project is back with 13 tracks that leave no escape. A poisonous potion that mixes in a lysergic and macabre way the most direct punk rock a la “1-2-3-4” with the horror and dark imagery of Misfits, Danzig, Samhain. The result is a catchy yet dark album enhanced by the unique and charismatic vocals that make you want to start over immediately. A devastating record to say the least, to be had also for the sumptuous artwork by Marco Divertimenti.
Reason Why – Cut You Loose (Mendeku Diskak | 7”)
Reason Why, a band from Istanbul featuring veterans from other bands such as Project Youth, Die In Vain and Oscuridad Eterna, drop this 7” with 4 tracks influenced by 80s UK punk. Sing alongs and choruses are supported by guitar, with a somewhat rock n roll sound, along with essential bass and drums, fast and rhythmic. A real barrage of songs, to be listened one after the other without taking a breath!
PasMort – C’est arrivé près de chez vous (Guerilla Asso)
Have you ever listened to those terrifying stories that are told when you sit around the fire at night? That’s pretty much the kind of stories told by the 4 tracks, 7 minutes in all, that make up the new EP by the quartet from Quebec. The music is in full Guerilla Asso style: quality punk rock sung in French, with original, highly edited and dense with references lyrics. Short but intense!
Zymt – Hochstapeln in der Bückzone (My ruin, Spastic Fantastic | LP 12”)
The Dortmund-based band succeeds in creating, in their lyrics as well as in their videos and graphics, a hyperrealistic imagery of great impact, aimed at ridiculing consumer society by emphasizing its absurd and grotesque aspects. Musically, the album, consisting of 22 short, snappy tracks, offers old-school punk rock sung in German, with garage influences and the skillful use of synthesizer that sounds as sarcastic as the lead vocals and choruses. Brilliant!
