Alarm! – S/T (Armageddon Label | 12″ LP)
From Stockholm comes this new band with members of legendary bands like Victims and Outlast. This new quartet brings us 9 tracks imbued with rabid hardcore punk, which with that hint of melody mixed with crust punk echoes and that typical Scandinavian sound makes the record a powerhouse. Besides very fast tracks there are some slower but equally energized ones: basically the run-up before the final assault. The lyrics are political, (see “Alerta!” to remove any doubt) and are sung with this edgy, pissed-off voice that fits in great. The artwork is a blast, and the sounds, especially the bass one, are something mind-blowing. A record that must be listened to on a loop, an absolute masterpiece!
Boneharm – Choices and Consequences ( DIY Koło | CD)
Boneharm from Poland, precisely from Kielce, come out with “Choices and Consequences” an album consisting of 10 tracks. Very personal d-beat/hardcore record as it is steeped in screamo, post-hc, crust and emo-core elements, also characterized by icy riffs typical of the Scandinavian school. In short, what you have in your hands is not a simple crust record but a musical vortex in which chaos reigns but at the same time everything seems to have its exact place. Screaming, scratchy vocals are contrasted with clean choruses, a small detail that gives that emo touch along with the calming melodic guitar parts. At the same time the rhythm section does not even give time to breathe, solid, fast and powerful it pushes this record to a really incredible level. Boneharm have been able to create an extraordinarily peculiar record, really a blast!
Cave Sex – S/t ( Symphony of destruction | 12″ LP)
Cave Sex from Singapore debut with 4 tracks on one sided 12″. Theirs is a very aggressive post-punk enriched by synth sounds and cold electronic drums, two characteristics that immediately bring us back to those typical 80s sounds. The gloomy bass and sharp, decisive guitar creep in between the synth melodies and the distant, reverberated vocals denounce the horrors of society. The topics in fact harken back to another staple genre of the 1980s namely anarcho-punk with anthems against war and social oppression. Finally, the artwork adds a post-apocalyptic vibe with an eerie image that seems to represent an industrial complex and at the same time a bombed out city. A truly amazing album!
Resto Basket – Le Seum (DIY | CD)
“Avoir le seum” is an expression from French youth slang: it comes from an Arabic word meaning poison and indicates a feeling of anger mixed with frustration. This new album by Resto Basket, whom we had already appreciated in 2021 with their previous work “Trajectoire”, therefore, can be defined as the description in words and music of this state of mind. A generation raised in the suburbs and escaped to the city that can’t find themselves in either environment and chewing on anger and frustration both because of a sense of personal dissatisfaction and because of what is happening to the planet: at this rate, they say, we will see cacti popping up in the Seine! Both musically and lyrically, the band confirms itself as an interesting reality in the transalpine punk rock scene but also shows that it has developed a more distinct personality and maturity. The sound, still fresh and melodic, is more energetic and assertive, and the choruses and countermelodies add a very emotionally powerful effect. Great work, guys!
Retsu – S/T (Retsu Records | LP / 783 Punx | CD, Tape)
Retsu in Japanese means “Violent,” “Furious,” and it turns out to be perfect for the sound and musical proposal of this band from Halifax, UK, that features Scoot (already present in bands of the caliber of Doom, Extinction of Mankind, Hellkrusher and others) together with members of The Masochists and other English bands. The physical formats offered are also interesting: such as the cassette tape that has on side A printed the red-and-black anarchist flag and on the other side the LGBTIQA+ flag; and such as the eco-mix vinyl format that makes each record colored differently. Musically we are faced with unprecedented ferocity, with devastating vocal presence, some of the coolest riffs in the category, and bludgeoning bass and drums. In short, a nice mix of Discharge, crust punk and hardcore with dark influences and politicized lyrics, as it should be. A mind-blowing album that we are sure will be talked about a lot in the crust/d-beat galaxy and beyond. Masterpiece!
Skartone – Ska Revolución (DIY)
Two things particularly touch me in music: the sound of sax and political lyrics. Well, on this new album by the ska-punk band from Bogotá, Colombia, there is a profusion of both elements. One does not need an in-depth knowledge of Spanish to understand what the lyrics are about, with explicit titles such as “Orgullo Obrero,” “¡A Las Calles!” and “A.C.A.B.,” and even the cover artwork leaves no room for interpretation! Active since 2005, albeit with several lineup changes, the band defines its music as “ska revolution and reggae consciousness,” and through its lyrics intends to promote the development of critical thinking on burning political and social issues of current events. Ska-punk and reggae, then, but also jazz, blues, dub, acid jazz and Latin music influences. All introduced by the first track, “Ya no tenemos miedo,” with spoken lyrics over a musical backdrop, affirming the strength of the resistance of the oppressed against the oppressors because no, we are not afraid! Shivers!
Typhoid Rosie – Last Words (DIY | 12” LP)
If you are in the mood for a boost of confidence and positivity in 90s punk rock / riot grrrl sauce, this is the album for you. The Brooklyn-based band, through the theatrical and energetic vocals of talented frontwoman Rosie Rebel, tells us stories with happy endings that invite us to rid ourselves of toxic relationships, haters and energy vampires and focus on self-esteem and love for the people (and pets) who care about us. For example, “Something to fight for,” the (true) story of the semi-paralyzed dog who walks again when he feels motivated. Or the spectacular “Cover it up (Fuck you, I’m so Beautiful),” an ode to body positivity that incites us to see beauty in the mirror in defiance of the aesthetic standards imposed by capitalist society. The witch hunt – as the remarkable vintage-style artwork suggests – is never over, but this gives us even more desire to make our voices heard, should they be our last words (hence the album title) before burning at the stake!
Also keep an eye on…
Backyard Superheroes – Mass Hysteria (Jump up Records | CD/12” LP). “This album,” reads the Bandcamp page, “is dedicated to our pets, the real heroes.” The cheerful New Jersey brigade’s new album talks about personal and global issues to the beat of ska-punk with a substantial horn section. Twenty-five percent of the proceeds go to the local SPCA, an animal welfare association.
Bad Image – II (Noise Merchant Records | Tape). Five songs that leave no escape thanks to explosive hardcore. Old school guitar riffs, pounding bass and drums, and Jaedyn’s powerful and edgy vocals. If you like Gel you will also love this Seattle band.
Groin – Paid in Flesh (No Time Records | 12″ LP, Tape). New work by the Arizona powerviolence/grindcore band that, with 20 songs in a scant 20 minutes, deflagrates everything in the vicinity to the sound of angry screams, tupa tupa, blast beats and sharp riffs!
Indikator B – S/T (Doomtown Records | 7″). After the 2019 tape demo this Zagreb band dedicated to rough and powerful punk sung in Croatian is back. If you like 80s Finnish hardcore and the UK82 strand of bands like GBH you’ll be hyped!
Kefalokleidoma -ΚΕΦΑΛΟΚΛΕΙΔΩΜΑ – Βαλκανικό Μαυσωλείο (Extreme Earslaughter, Scarecrow, Walk The Line, Punk ‘n’ Loud Records | 12″ LP). From Thessaloniki comes this incredible band devoted to hardcore violence as they call themselves, a perfect synthesis of crust, d-beat, violent metal and wild hardcore. 6 amazing tracks sung in Greek. Small note, the title of the mini album means “Balkan Mausoleum.”
Litige – 7″ (Echo Canyon Records | 7″) After the 2020 full-length, Litige from Lyon are back with 3 tracks fully in their style. Super catchy punk with limpid post-punk influences (especially in the guitar melodies) female vocals in French and a very rhythmic drumming that doesn’t stop for a second. A delightful 7″!
Lucta – Eterna Lotta (Static Shock Records | 12″ LP). 9 tracks of bleak and edgy punk sung in Italian by this band from Milan. If you like 80s hardcore punk vibes and contemporary bands like Potere Negativo, Golpe and Astio you will surely go crazy for this sumptuous work to say the least!
Nä – Fušerinä (DIY) This group from Banská Bystrica releases their first album. It is chaotic and delirious anarcho punk sung in Slovak with political and social themes including hatred for Nazis, the church and popes, and those who wear their own band’s t-shirt on stage, all topped off with an absurd trumpet peeking out here and there between songs. Great!
The Noname – Fortress Besieged (Pasidaryk Pats, Smith & Miller, Abbruch Records | CD/12” LP). The Chinese band is back with a new album filled with eminent featurings from around the world. Each track is thus tinged with a different musical nuance: from the streetpunk of Non Servium and Perkele to the melodic punk rock of The Choices, from the hardcore of Acidez to the ska-punk of Big D & the Kids Table. A must-have!
OMIXLI – ΟΜΙΧΛΗ – Till The End (Punk ‘n’ Loud Records, Joe Pogo Records, Under Attack Records, Emergency Records). The band from Thessaloniki is back with a new album and they do it in a big way. Precious street punk with working class, anti-capitalist and street lyrics with 7 tracks sung in Greek and 3 in English. We are sure they will make punx and skins scream under the stage at upcoming concerts!
Self Prison – S/t. Very little information can be found on the internet: they are a quartet, they are from Tbilisi (Georgia) and they make raw d-beat / hardcore punk. But the only really important thing to know is that this record rocks! 1 intro + 4 tracks all tight and characterized by sharp riffs, pounding drums and dark bass. Oh, and the screamed and slightly echoed vocals are also a blast! Rated 10
