Punk Rock

Resto Basket – Bonne Nouvelle

An old acquaintance of Radio Punk is back: after discovering them with “Trajectoire” (2021) and appreciating them again with “Le Seum” (2024), we find the French band Resto Basket with a new EP that includes the singles released during the year, plus a new song. The topic of the EP is a critique of capitalist society, which pushes us to work at a frenetic pace and then spend money on things we don’t need or frantically seek out new experiences. So where’s the good news of the title? The answer is in the song of the same name: we can escape the mechanism by taking time for ourselves, talking and helping each other. Musically faithful to their trademark sound, Resto Basket delight us with refined and energetic punk rock, which evolves with each album and finds its own identity within the prolific French scene, which also includes Poésie Zéro, who feature on the track “Rêve Pourri.” Another great album by the guys from Grenoble, highly recommended!

O’ Laochra – Foclóir

If you love playing with words, this album is something you’ll really enjoy. Starting with the title, an Irish word that sounds almost like “folklore” but actually means dictionary, and appears on the cover just like a dictionary entry. The New York trio beautifully combines punk rock and traditional Irish music in a debut EP that is nothing short of brilliant. Even in the lyrics, which are smart, refined, and rich in references, the sarcastic view of modern society, dominated by capitalism and technology, is intertwined with evocations of Irish mythology. Thus, the legend of Sinann, who drowned in a well in search of wisdom, becomes a symbol of modern humanity dealing with Artificial Intelligence, “chasing ghosts in the machine.” Six tracks, each more intriguing than the last, that will win you over from the very first listen!

Crash Ton Rock – Le Feu Sacré (Stomp Records | 12” LP)

A declaration of love for punk rock meant not only as music, but as a set of ethical and political values. This passion is the “sacred fire” that gives the title to the Quebec band’s wonderful album. Punk rock, therefore, is extremely catchy and, with a nod to country and folk, with a foray into ska in the song “La différence,” featuring Patrick Taylor and Alexandre Fecteau of The Planet Smashers. Punk rock that cannot fail to take a stand against the evils that afflict our time, such as racism, militarism, capitalism, environmental destruction, and gender violence, inviting us to fight them with solidarity and resistance. But the sacred fire is also a boundless passion for life, despite the passing of time and the fear of death: “I party, I let loose, I devour, I dance, and I make love, like fireworks in the sky, on the eve of the last day.”

Post Punk

Home Front – Watch It Die (La Vida Es Un Mus | 12″ LP)

You open your eyes, it’s 1985, you get up, put on a pair of worn-out jeans and a denim jacket, leave the house, someone picks you up, and you’re in a DeLorean. What shall we listen to? Oh yes, this new album is awesome, you have to hear it! Home Front are releasing their third album, and they’re bringing us their great attitude, an unmistakable style that has won over those who appreciate 80s post-punk sounds. This album is particularly infused with electronic and synthpop sounds reminiscent of music icons such as New Order, but here we also find that punk oi! anger provided by the vocals and guitar. The bass is also cool, standing out excitingly in this ensemble. Above all, this album manages to create an atmosphere to immerse yourself in, resulting in a true masterpiece. Bravo!

Hardcore Punk

Quasi Buio – La Prima Stella Dell’Ultimo Mattino (Radio Punk, Controcanti, ForeverXtrueXrecordsX, Punti Scena, The Fucking Clinica, Wrong Disk | 12″ LP)

The Rome-based band formed by Francesco, Mics, Stefano and Ben is releasing their second album this autumn, featuring 11 songs in just about 13 minutes. Short and sweet! After seeing them live, we were pleasantly surprised by their fast, pounding old-school hardcore punk sound, with riffs that stick in your head and sharp, screamed vocals. There is a lot of commitment in this new work, you can hear and see it – thanks also to the exquisite artwork by Francesco, the band’s singer – there is a concept and attention to detail that goes from form to content. The introspective and emotionally charged lyrics take you on a journey through different themes related to our place in the universe. In the hardcore punk scene, this is an album that stands out thanks to its unmistakable dusky atmosphere. Superb work!

217 – In Your Gaze (Time To Kill Records | LP, CD)

The band from Pescara get into action with 12 tracks with an unmistakable hardcore punk vibe. A potent mix of old school, skilfully blended with the 90s sound, with hints of alternative and gothic rock. An absolutely versatile album thanks to the changes in rhythm, the varied vocals and the absolutely extraordinary bass and guitar work, when it’s time to go full speed and when it’s time to create more intricate sounds. As for the lyrics, there is variety, touching on themes such as pain, but also the inner conflict of being individuals within this selfish, capitalism-dominated society. Whether live or in the studio, 217 prove themselves to be sensational and damn unique!

Psico Galera – Memorie Di Occhi Grigi (Sorry State Records | 12″ LP)

Psico Galera, a Venetian band that had already released a couple of albums, return to assault our ears, more furious than ever. Between rattling riffs, dissonant and unpredictable solos, and chaotic vocals, this album flows beautifully. The most violent hardcore punk blends with a generally tumultuous and distorted sound à la GISM, also incorporating more metal and rock’n’roll sounds. The artwork by Marco Rapisarda (the band’s bassist) perfectly represents this cool chaos of eight tracks!

Pill Mill – S/T (Neon Taste Records, Slow Death Records | 7″)

Eight songs lasting one minute each, fast-paced tracks and an old-school sound. This Canadian hardcore punk band from British Columbia delights us with this frenzied, well-constructed EP, featuring catchy tunes and the right amount of grit provided by the screaming vocals. Crazy!

No Idols – S/T (Iron Lung Records | 7″)

From the simple yet captivating cover art, it is clear that we are dealing with good old 80s hardcore punk, featuring powerful vocals and an almost primitive scream of unparalleled intensity. In five songs with powerful phrasing and just the right amount of melody, this American band really gets us pumped up!

Ska Punk

Arcade Allstars – Destined 4 Disaster (Pink Lemonade Records | 12” LP / CD)

This is the first full-length album by the band from Ontario, Canada, whose lyrics tackle issues related to mental health, addictions, and, more generally, anything that can cause stigma in society. Musically, we are treated to melodic, danceable ska-punk, with a solid horn section and skilful use of keyboards and synthesisers that help create a modern and original sound. Do not miss it!

Turkey Blaster Omega – We Should Hang Out More (Suction Boy)

From Rochester, New York, comes this great album that will delight the ears of those who love ska-punk with jazz, soul, and reggae influences. The lyrics range from social issues such as gender violence and body shaming to more personal and introspective topics. But what is most striking is the extraordinary voice that interacts perfectly with the horn section, creating an effect of great emotional impact. Sublime!

Crust Punk

Fosgene – Ancora tumulti ancora tempesta (Sistema Mortal | Tape)

The band from the Veneto hills releases this new work, which follows their previous album entitled Catabasi. In five tracks with evocative titles and lyrics, Fosgene takes us on a journey through this world on the brink of collapse, where something seems to be resisting the apocalypse. The songs are a mix of chaotic Italian hardcore punk from the 1980s, the rawest and most primitive crust punk/d-beat, and a few metal riffs that give them a darker touch. They also have the great merit of sticking in your head and being incredibly unique. A masterpiece!

Axe – Il Cimitero è Dappertutto (Sistema Mortal | Tape)

This band, formed between Verona and Milan with members of Lucta, Las Palmas and Sogno Libero, smashes everything with five highly political tracks. Musically, we are faced with extremely sharp and rough 1980s Italian crust punk/hardcore punk, which, thanks to the dual vocals, often alternating between very different voices, is extremely original. If you love tumultuous sounds, watch out: it can be addictive!
