Hardcore / Punk
Amyl And The Sniffers – Cartoon Darkness (12” LP Rough Trade / CD B2B Records)
Let’s make one thing clear right away: we are biased, we love Amyl and the Sniffers madly and, after listening to the singles, we have been eagerly awaiting this record! “Cartoon Darkness,” recorded in Dave Grohl’s notorious 606 Studio, retains the same punk and nonconformist soul that has characterized all of the Australian band’s previous works, but changes tones slightly with the addition to the tracklist of several softer tracks such as “Big Dreams” and “Bailing On Me.” Of course, there is no shortage of songs that are real incendiary molotovs such as “It’s Mine,” “Jerkin’” and “Motorbike Song.” Overall the record is really wonderful, the rough and fuzz sound of the guitar literally blows us away and the bass and drums are also no less, with their raw and impactful mood. The alternation between fast and more chill tracks creates a really pleasant and unique path. Finally, it is impossible not to mention the unmistakable voice of Amyl whose personality bursts from all pores shaking you in the soul, this thanks also to the lyrics that once again deal with social and topical issues but with a positive and full of energy slant, which seems to tell us not to give up and to react, always. In short, we absolutely love this album, you get the picture!
Chubby And The Gang – And Then There Was… (Flatspot Records | Tape, 12” LP, CD)
Charlie Manning Walker aka Chubby Charles is a brilliant mind. There is little to say or object to. In fact if we go to see he is in the lineup besides this incredible band also in The Chisel and Fulmine, other bands particularly loved and listened to by the punk, hc and skin circle. Coming back to this new album we are faced with 16 positively mind-blowing tracks. There is everything from more hardcore punk rants to more speed rock n roll swerves via catchy pub rock refrains and ballads to be sung drunkenly rotten with a gargantuan-sized pint in hand. Another invaluable piece to listen to on repeat!
Darcy – Tout est à nous (AT(h)OME | CD/LP 12”)
Two years after “Machines de Guerre,” among our favorite albums of 2022, Darcy from Brittany are back with an explosive new call to action. The watchword is to resist and not surrender, neither to oppression and injustice, nor to resignation and despondency. It is not us against the system, it is the system that is against us and our duty is to defend ourselves. The message, loud and clear, is punctuated by a solid and powerful hardcore in which the vocals, although screamed, do not lose contact with the singing and the melodies, enriched by choruses and counter-chants, stay in the head from the first listen. A record with a strong emotional impact, which gives an amazing drive and turns anger into enthusiasm and confidence in the strength of “us.” A must-have!
Golpe de Gracia – Herriotzari Irri (Tough Ain’t Enough, Primator Crew | 12” LP)
The Madrid-based band comes out with this new album of 10 raw, street punk songs with hardcore influences and just the right dash of melody and singalongs. The edgy vocals and massive choruses help make these songs stick in your head, and the sounds, rough and ’80s, perfectly fit the band’s pitch. The cover art then is the crowning glory of this splendid album. But enough waffling–pull up the volume and enjoy it with a cold beer in your hand!
S.H.I.T. – For A Better World (La Vida Es Un Mus, Iron Lung Records | 12” LP)
The Toronto band is back with this new album released as a co-production between two labels that need no introduction. 7 tracks of chaotic, disturbing hardcore punk ready to make your ears bleed with these sharp and powerful sounds. The excellent riffs that stick in your head right away are accompanied by screaming, scratching and unique vocals. Truly a great record!
Sick Fucks – Pure Thrill (Warsaw Big Ass, Give Praise Records, Snick Snack Distro, Total Slob, Wasted Adulthood | Tape)
Five tracks make up this old-school hardcore punk barrage that sounds like it came out of the American 80s but no, it comes from Tbilisi, capital of Georgia. Rattling sounds and riffs, cannon bass-drums and a hate-spewing vocal accompany us in this EP that is nothing short of amazing and well crafted in all regards. Press play!
Tenia – Anime Sconvolte (Annina Record, Entes Anomicos, Lanterna Pirata, Malammòre, Pattada Records, Poison Hearts, Radio Punk, SEDATION, Shove Records, Soundtown, Tifone Crew, Tuscia Clan, Wrong Disk Records | 12” LP)
We are overjoyed to announce the arrival in physical format of our new co-production! Online it was already there, it has now arrived in super swanky 12” vinyl. The record is a hardcore punk bomb and you can hear all the urgency from the quartet to express themselves angrily but at the same time going in different directions trying to open up to various nuances. A flooding river that comes across as original, fresh, melodic, furious, poetic, political, and seems to shake you out of the apathy of our days. Quoting the final sentence of “Opinioni Rassicuranti”( “Reassuring Opinions”), “Those who think must act.” The album “Anime Sconvolte” is a wonderful collective work with a very strong personality, and let us say that an album like this was long overdue, one of those albums that is very difficult to pin down and that in the end makes you say that it resembles nothing you have heard before. These 11 tracks also contain several guest collaborations such as with Irene and Alfredo from Narkan, speech by Angie, cello in the Outro by Matteo Bennici. While the recordings are by Rec Fast Die Young of which Tenia’s own drummer Zacca is a part, along with Riccardo Pelle Pellegrini, the mix is by Francesco Borrelli, the master by West West Side Music and the artwork, simply stunning is by Elena Mistrello. All that remains is to invite you to click play or lower the needle on your turntable and if you want a copy you can contact us, the band or one of the labels that participated in this DIY conspiracy. Thank you Tenia for this wonderful album made with heart and head and let us quote them again… “But how great is an idea!”, it really has to be said!
Punk / Post Punk
High Vis – Guided Tour (Dais Records | 12” LP, CD / Flatspot Records | Tape)
The essential, British and working class artwork introduces us to what is the overall concept of the record: the world described from the High Vis’ point of view is gray, dank, reeking of stale beer and sweat but despite this it cannot suppress the urge to react. This imagery emerges crystal clear thanks to hardcore punk sounds overwhelmingly steeped in Britpop, indie rock and modern post punk, with some hints of electronics. A wholly personal mix that now distinguishes the London-based band on its third album. Screaming, angry vocals contrast with the somber combination of bass and drums, and the melancholy melody of the guitar line. There is also no shortage of musical experimentation that results in true masterpieces such as Mind’s A Lie. On this tour traced by the sequence of songs, one feels guided as if on a ship on the open sea cradled by the waves. An album imbued with anger, melancholy and a sense of defeat typical of the many who struggle daily to have a decent existence. We are in front of one of the records of the year!
Tube Alloys – Evil Angels (La Vida Es Un Mus | 7”)
After rapturing our hearts with the full length “Magnetic Points,” the Los Angeles band returns with two songs recorded on 7”. This small ep definitely lives up to the previous work: modern and hypnotic post punk thanks to the riffs that capture you staying in your mind from the first listen. Bass and drums support well the two tracks making the high-pitched singing, which is now a trademark of the band, stand out. Super!
Crust Punk / Raw Punk / D-beat
DHK – Haz Sentir Tu Odio (Metadona Records, Little Jan’s Hammer, CocheBomba, Tvmbalavalla Discos | 12” LP)
From the capital of Peru, Lima, comes this new work by the band DHK. Artwork in perfect “DIS” style, exactly like the 13 songs: fast, powerful, compact and no frills. Raw and effective d-beat hardcore punk that is clearly inspired by bands such as Discharge or Besthoven to stay in South America and just to mention a band with which they even shared a split a while back. Thanks to this reverberated and edgy voice and this native language singing and such dark and icy sounds you will feel like you have gone back in time… Great record!
Inferno Personale – La Scelta è Tua (Symphony Of Destruction, Neon Taste Records, Wildsau-Records | 12” LP)
Take a bit of Japanese crust sounds, some of that furious Wretched-esque hardcore and a bit of Kontatto-esque d-beat and mix it with grit. At this point add a unique twist and you have the second album by Inferno Personale, a raw punk band based in Bremen, Germany but with members from all over the world, as evidenced by the singing in Italian. If the first album had caught your attention, these 9 songs will literally blow your mind!
Mob 47 – Tills Du Dör (D-Takt & Råpunk Records | 12″ LP)
New chapter in the sumptuous discography of the legendary Swedish hardcore punk band. The band formed in 1982 in Stockholm assaults us right from the start with the formula we know well: screaming, heartbreaking vocals, razor-sharp fast riffs, and cannonballing bass and drums. The songs, strictly in Swedish as always, flow by very fast also thanks to the short duration of the average 1 minute and in fact the 16 tracks come to an end making you immediately want to start over again. The cover artwork is essential and fitting and we can’t wait to have the physical record in our hands!
Ska Punk
Stuck Lucky – Counting Curses (Ska Punk International | CD/12” LP)
Just in time for the Halloween season, here comes from Tennessee a fine ska-core record with very “dark” tones, but which does not take itself too seriously. On the contrary, irony and self-irony take center stage amid frenetic rhythms and an easygoing horn section. The album is enriched by some features from fellow bands including Flying Raccoon Suit on the track “Dead Inside.” Disc or trick?
Punk Rock
Freidenkeralarm – Geschichten vom Beton
The Trier-based band, devoted to energetic and catchy punk rock sung in German, is at the forefront of defending the values of anti-fascism, anti-racism and anti-sexism. In song lyrics but also in practice, participating in solidarity projects and taking care to keep the environment safe during their concerts. After 2020’s “Antifaschistisch, solidarisch, laut!”, which is also their motto (anti-fascist, solidary, loud), they are back with this new EP that reiterates that the only antidote to the evils of the age such as pervasive fascism and climate disaster is solidarity. For the time being digital only, hopefully it will soon become available in physical format as well.
Team Nonexistent – Teeth
Originating as an acoustic solo project of Sophia LaBelle-Plott, the group’s vocalist, Team Nonexistent, a queer punk band from Denver, Colorado, later became a classic punk rock lineup with the addition of bass, guitar and drums. But what is most striking musically is the particular use of vocals and choruses that make the sound of this album highly original. And the lyrics are no less impressive, describing mental states, unease and toxic relationships with powerful imaginative and visionary metaphors. Not to be missed!
