Diyno Mixtape – September 2023 releases – our selection

September 2023 releases selected for our monthly column Diyno Mixtape

As explained in editorial 5, here we are ready to guide you to discover this month’s favorites. Why Diyno Mixtape? Diyno is a pun between dinosaur (our mascot is a magenta-colored tyrannosaurus) and DIY – do it yourself – since this is our ethos, our compass, our method and guiding spirit, our world. Mixtape is to give the idea of a collage, of a varied set of content not only in music, but also possibly in fanzines, books, films, various projects. So in this September 2023 Diyno Mixtape, our crew represented by our dinosaur is going to mix a few little things from punk and diy world! In addition to what we consider literally unmissable, at the bottom you will find a section called “Also keep an eye on…” where we will include other gems that we are keen to mention. Here you will find, for example, albums that we liked, but slightly less than the ones described above, but that we still recommend because you might love them. You will also find demos, videos, other special projects, reissues, content that we did not have time to explore because we discovered it late or was released at the end of the month, and more.
NB: The list is in alphabetical order by band/author and is not a chart.
Be curious and if you have advice or opinions to give us on September releases, feel free to contact us on our social media or via email!

If you’re interested in the physical copy of any of these albums you can write to info@radiopunk.it. Some are in our catalog, some could be available on demand.

Brorlab – “Working Out In Heaven” (La Vida Es Un Mus | 12″ LP)

Unpredictable. Chaotic. Dadaist. These are the first words to describe the Antwerp band’s 15 tracks. We are extremely astonished because we are talking about a record that mixes electronics, funky bass, fuzz guitars, frantic and inconstant rhythms and an energetic voice that immediately reminds us of the singing of riot grrrl bands. They call themselves fuckwave / no wave and have the impetuosity and attitude typical of punk. An outstanding record for lovers of mixing genres, for those who do not listen with earmuffs and for lovers of bands such as Viagra Boys, Serpe Terror and Cuir given the strong electronic / synth punk component.

Coupe Gorge – “Silence De Mort” (Offside Records | 12″ LP)

Hardcore punk from the Breton school, a territory that is churning out an incredible amount of qualitatively excellent bands. Coupe Gorge in fact come from Brest and include members of bands that are already well known, we will mention a few that have recently come out with masterpieces: Syndrome 81, Prisonnier Du Temps, Mentalité 81. In these 12 songs you will find an impact hardcore with the temper and compactness typical of oi!, moreover the French singing gives the right meanness also conveyed by the dark and majestic artwork. Unmissable physical format: a gatefold with transparent splatter colored vinyl. Unique, original songs with the perfect balance among speed, solidity and melodic component that embellishes the whole. A sensational record!

Deluxxe – If You Were Me (Avant! Records | LP 12″)

What do members of hardcore punk and oi! bands such as Bad Blood, Violent Way and Exhibition have in common? Some of them play in this amazing post-punk / new wave band from Buffalo, NY. Exciting, brilliant, limpid and damn catchy and heartening album. This record with minimal and evocative graphics will take you to a dimension of comforting nostalgia. 8 tracks to listen to on the road while looking out the window on a rainy day. You will hum in your head over and over again “Waiting For A Sign,” “Common Ground” and “Lightning In A Bottle.” Masterpiece!

Marnero – Odradek part I

Can trumpets, cello, pathos and punk music coexist? If you are wondering, perhaps you have never listened to Marnero… The band from Bologna reconfirmed this September that yes, not only this is possible, but they do it very well! They do it releasing another solid piece of excellent music. If you like melancholic sounds, swirls of emotions in a set of masterfully used words, this is the album for you! Don’t miss it!

Non Servium – Criatura

We’ve been waiting for it for eight years, and it’s finally here! A lot of things have happened between the Spanish band’s new album and its predecessor “Resurgir,” including personal and worldwide problems and side projects. But Non Servium are back with a bang with this concentrate of heart, anger and sweat titled “Criatura.” The single previewed in June, “Hordes Of Punks,” featuring David from The Casualties, hinted at a more hardcore twist. Listening to the album in full, however, we get the usual explosive blend of street punk/oi!, hardcore and metal to which the group has accustomed us, on topics ranging from personal to political and social. There are two trips into the world of movies. The Intro is taken from the audio of a movie that, despite being dubbed in Spanish, you will not struggle to recognize because it is a true cult film: Mel Brooks’ “Young Frankenstein.” And there is also a very personal cover version of “Freedom,” a song from Tarantino’s “Django Unchained” soundtrack. Spectacular!

Oxo86 – … and the usual suspects (Sunny Bastards | CD/ 12″ LP)

Oxo86 sounds like a beer name. Instead, it is a German ska-punk band that has already been active for more than 20 years. On this album they have brought together 12 well-known characters of the scene from various countries around the world (the “usual suspects,” precisely, who appear on the cover in mugshot pose) and with each of them they have re-sung one of their songs, in English rather than German. Greg from Bishops Green, Valerio from The Offenders, Jussi from The Valkyrians, to name a few. The result is a very pleasant mix of voices united under a common denominator: beer, friendship, beer, internationalism, beer. And of course, enthralling rhythm that makes it impossible to sit still, and singalongs that stay in your head from the first listen. Have a beer and move your little feet!

Pkew Pkew Pkew – Siiick Days (Stomp Records | LP)

From Toronto with a load of nonsense and catchy songs, here they come Pkew Pkew Pkew, produced by Pete Steinkopf (guitarist and founder of Bouncing Souls), with their new album. Let us make it clear right away: the band does not take itself seriously and does not write serious lyrics. The first track on Siiick Days, The Dumbest Thing I Ever Done, is about selling the PlayStation – yes, for real. The thing is, it sounds like they are telling us the truth about the world. Add catchy riffs, keyboards and choruses and you’re done: simple punk that will keep you entertained!

Rancoeur – Lame en peine

New production by the French group from Nancy. Four new tracks that confirm just how much this band is worth keeping an eye on. The band’s cold and sharp sound is consolidated, the rhythm increases track after track leading and hypnotising the listener ‘til the end of the album. They define their genre as a mix of Oi! and coldwave/post-punk, an excellent description of their characteristic sound. In summary, this album has only one flaw: it ends too soon! Don’t miss this bomb!

Sincere Engineer – ‘Cheap Grills’ (Hopeless Records | LP)

A great blend of songwriting, riot girrrl, Laura Jane Grace and The Lawrence Arms. Started primarily as a solo project, Sincere Engineer are now a full band (from Chicago). And they recently put out this record, Cheap Grills, which combines all the best they have in their pockets: lyrics from the depths of her demons without forgetting irony and catchy riffs that make your feet move up and down. In short, if you want some original punk, female-fronted and that will bring both smiles and tears, you have found the right record!

Tube Alloys – “Magnetic Points” (La Vida Es Un Mus, Urge Records | 12″ LP)

After very few listens it will get into your head, that’s for sure. “Magnetic Point” by Los Angeles band Tube Alloys is an incredible post-punk record composed of hypnotic yet disturbing songs, traits that also emerge from the two videos made for the songs “Jubilee” and “Mall Trollers”. A sequence of tracks characterized by distorted bass and reverberated vocals that immediately capture you and then unsettle you with two electronic and one spoken interludes. A really interesting record and definitely not to be missed for those who are into post punk!

Warkrusher – “Armistice” (Agipunk Records (EU), Desolate Records (US) | 12″ LP)

After a few releases of demos, EPs and scattered tracks on bandcamp, here comes the debut album by Warkrusher from Montreal, Québec. 7 crust / stench-core tracks with a crazy shot and unprecedented fierceness. A total of 30 minutes, immediately bringing to mind early Bolt Thrower and of course the pioneers Deviated Instinct thanks to a rocky, imposing, nice compact sound. A truly complete album, enhanced by the battling mega-metal artwork that will catapult you into their imagery. Seen in Scintilla at the big September To Dismember festival comeback, it is safe to say that this band is devastating in every area, both studio and live. A must have record, if they happen to be in your neck of the woods run out to see them, they spark up like crazy!

Also keep an eye on…

Cemetery Girl – “Who The Fuck Is Cemetery Girl”. Very interesting debut album by this Detroit band. Raw, pissed-off queercore for fans of G.L.O.S.S., Limp Wrist and given the lyrics, Ljudmila Pavlichenko.

Choke Combat – S/T (TASM Records | LP 12″). This band from Munich has turned out 12 songs that divinely alternate and mix oi! sing-alongs and hardcore rants.

Dalton – “Sappi/Senza Eroi” (Hellnation | 7″). The Roman band is back with a single featuring two songs that skillfully and expertly mix punk, beat, bovver rock, and glam.

Fever – Cupio Dissolvi (Flamingo Records | 12″ LP). Unique and original mixture. Perfect artwork for this dark, granitic, icy sound. If you like Chain Cult, Poison Ruin, Kontatto, Wretched turn up the volume!

-Heavy Discipline – Your Scapegoat (Painkiller Records | LP 12″). Artwork, sound and wickedness that harken back to the Boston school and X-Claim! Remarkable old-school hardcore by the Pittsburgh band.

Misery – The Early Years (Agipunk Records | 12″ LP). Reissue of the legendary crust punk band from Minneapolis on colored “hot pink in beer” vinyl including “Born Fed Slaughtered” 7″, “Blindead” 7″ EP, “Children Of War” 7″ EP and the two “Split” 7″ EPs with Assrash and Hellspawn.

Random Hand – S/T (Bomber Music | Cd/12” LP). Ska-punk with metal and hip hop influences and very British sound for the band that celebrates its 20th birthday with this fifth album.

Karton Zine n.11: fanzine written in two languages (French and English). Art, music, diy and antagonism with a beautiful layout and affordable price. Free pdf!

Katarsi – “Katarsi” (Discos Enfermos, Flexi Discos | 12″ LP). Solo project that alternates between Basque and Spanish in lyrics mixing post punk, synthpunk, French oi and classic English punk.

The Uncouth – “The Uncouth” (Contra Records, Insurgence Records | 12″ LP). Street punk / oi! from Kansas City. 11-track album for lovers of rough street sounds but with just the right amount of rock n roll and melody.
