Misfits – The Devil’s Rain – Review

“…This is a new beginning and not the following of previous works…”: with these words Jerry Only announced the Misfits’ new album entitled Devil’s Rain. Another important thing, as Jerry said, is that “this is an album also for people who don’t know us”. With these two premises I’ll start reviewing these 16 tracks from this band from New Jersey, which has a long and difficult history, but this is not the story for today.
The album doesn’t start off in the best of ways with the first song (Devil’s Rain) which is shallow; already from the second track it starts to become a bit more interesting with some good songs: Cold In Hell, Vivid Red, Land of the Dead e Unexplained. The songs mostly are aggressive (except for Unexplained, Dark Shadows and Sleepwalkin’ which, even though they are not aggressive, they are there to relax the listener and to enhance the following songs) and the Misfits sound (more the one from the Graves’ era than the one from the first Misfits) comes out. Horror atmospheres, a grim and powerful punk rock sound and classis Misfits themes (blood, zombies, demons, etc.) make this a good album. Good vocals for Jerry Only, the guitars are well done and drums and bass accompany with personality.
Certainly not a mile stone of the genre, but it’s an album worth listening to and more than once. I personally liked it.
