Punk rock between fun and reflection in Resto Basket ‘s “Trajectoire”
Play and run: here’s the new album by French band Resto Basket
Have you ever gone to a restaurant and left in a hurry… forgetting to pay the bill? Well, if so, you should know that in France they would say you did a “resto basket”, an idiom made up of the words for restaurant and sneakers (to run faster…).
And Resto Basket is also the name of a punk rock band from Grenoble that, despite the young age of its members, has just in these days (January 25, to be precise) already released its second album, titled “Trajectoire”.
Since the first listening, the 8 tracks, sung in French, capture for their freshness. Energetic and catchy punk rock in pure 2000s style, to be clear. You get the feeling that the 5 guys have a great time playing, lingering especially in the end of the songs to play with the instruments as in a live dimension.

The trajectory that gives the album its title is existential. The typically youthful zigzagging between the desire to have fun breaking the rules and the fear of growing old inside and losing the carefree attitude. So the “Peter Pan” of the homonymous song counts his hair in the mirror for fear of losing some and becoming an adult. Because it could mean becoming like Jean Charles, the protagonist of the first single, “JC”, a petty man who does not smoke, does not drink, and when he comes back from work has the bed as his only horizon. Poetic and thoughtful lyrics, then, that alternate with moments of irony and pure divertissement, as in the song “La Troisième Bière Mondiale”, which hypothesizes the total chaos in the event that the whole planet were to run out of … beer!
In their presentation, Resto Basket claim to be inspired by bands like Le Réparateur, Justin(e), Les Sheriff and Lagwagon. Well, if you like the genre, go listen to them, you won’t regret it. I found them to be a pleasant discovery and I think we will still hear about them.
Here is the funny music video for “Piste Noire”, the second single with an enthralling ska rhythm
