Review: 40127 – Self Titled
From San Donato to your stereo: 40127 first album
A small plastic square that has a whole different value if we consider how many sacrifices and effort have been made to make it: this and much more is the first cd by 40127 from Bologna, produced by the record companies Hellnation and Ansaldi. In addition to a very charming minimal artwork, the booklet is further enhanced by some very interesting photos by Luca Gieri.
The album has the same name as the band, 40127, as a tribute to the working class neighborhood San Donato (the number is its postal code), where the band’s members have grown up and have discovered their common passion for music and the realities of a problematic neighborhood.
Musically speaking, we can count a very large number of influences: from rock’n’roll to oi!, passing through Ramones’ style punk rock and Nirvana’s grunge; for sure an interesting mix, that identifies the band both in terms of lyrics, very related to neighborhood stories and working class topics, but never trivial or repetitive as in most oi! Bands; but especially in terms of music, making it difficult to classify the band in a specific subgenre. Also the structure of the album is very good, in which more powerful songs alternate to more melancholic ones, turning the listening into an emotional swing.
The distinctive element of the band is certainly the voice, with an almost delicate timbre, very different from what we are used to. Very interesting are also the instrumental games that are created within the tracks, thanks to very imaginative and sometimes almost aggressive guitar riffs, supported by a virtuoso bass and very precise drums.
According to my personal taste, worthy of note are the tracks “Schiavo” and “Senza te”, featuring Max, the singer of Diario di Bordo, which triggers an inspiring game of voices.
In short, we have waited for this album so long, but in the end it came out… and it’s a big win!
