Review: Plankton – Space Impact
Not only the night spent at the Smashsound Fest – live report is available below – left us with good memories, but gave us the chance to find out about Plankton. They are a very young band from Florence whose album, “Space Impact”, we are going to review today.
Let’s start by describing the CD kindly given to us by the good-hearted Sola – guitar player – : both by the cover and the design in general we get a hunch about the content, in fact the five tracks plus the intro are all Star Wars-themed. Generally speaking, it is something possibly seen before, but the collage present inside the booklet sure managed to get a smile out of us.
The intro, which is a punk version of the Star Wars’ theme song, gets us instantaneously into the album’s mood. Indeed, the following songs “Una nuova speranza”, “Area 51” and “Goshar” are a mix of both catchy and fast riffs. Everything sounds like an interesting blend of old school hardcore and american melodic punk, laced with straightforward lyrics that results singable at first listen. The last song, “Haraij”, is definitely faster than the other songs and has english lyrics; it reminds of early Pennywise and it has the right amount of energy needed to finish an album with.
We find interesting to have lyrics dealing with social issues and critique to society and still to stick with their “space passion”.
In closing, it is a short and remarkable album. Plankton are certainly good musicians with good ideas who have what it takes to improve and get ahead. Recommended!
